Inside Darwin Digital – Michael O’Sullivan

Michael co-founded Darwin Digital and heads up our business strategy and digital business development.  He has over 20 years of marketing experience building global and local brands. A native of Ireland, he has lived and worked in the USA, Serbia, Italy and Switzerland. After telling us what inspired him to launch a new digital agency, he shares some marketing insights and industry trends.

You are one of the Co-Founders of Darwin Digital. Tell us why you decided to start your own agency?

When the opportunity came up to start my own agency I didn’t think twice. My Co-Founder, Daniel Kaempf and I have been working in marketing and communications since the web was created. A lot of start-ups and smaller business struggle to maximise the potential of digital sphere and that’s where we provide direction and support. Of course, we were well aware of the latest online developments and the digital revolution. We knew that we had to embrace on digital and online marketing because that’s the future of the industry.

What are three adjectives you would use to describe Darwin Digital?

The three adjectives that describe Darwin Digital best are responsive, collaborative and transformative. It’s also these three attributes that differentiate us from other agencies.  Our approach is responsive because we help businesses understand and adapt to the challenges of a changed digital market place. We do this by collaborating closely with our clients and making sure we really understand their business goals and needs. This transformative way of working allows us to deliver breakthrough digital insights and solutions.

You have over 20 years of experience in marketing. Tell us what makes a digital marketing campaign successful?

Most importantly you have to know your client’s goals. Only if you know what you want to achieve, can you decide what marketing strategy to take and what tools to use. Once you have mapped out where you want to go you can start planning how you will get there. At Darwin Digital, we have a creative and reliable team that works hard to implement that plan flawlessly. And of course coffee helps too.

What are current trends in digital marketing and where is the industry headed?

Inbound and content marketing are some of the most effective marketing methods and currently a big trend. The basic idea is to align your content with your client’s interests and unique selling point. It makes sense and that’s why it works so well.

The overall digital industry has huge potential. In the future, our lives will be more and more connected. We will be driving smart cars, live in digital homes and our body functions will be monitored by wearables. This presents incredible potential for digital communications and marketing.

What is the one tool you absolutely need to be productive – apart from your computer of course?

My biggest time saver is probably my Renault Twizy. It’s a small electric city car and every morning I use it to take my daughter and son to school in Vevey. It’s also great for quickly driving to meetings in Lausanne or Geneva. I absolutely love that it takes only seconds to find parking. What is more, it is good for the environment.
